2017-18 New School Year

Dear Parents and Guardians,

While there is still a full month of summer fun yet to come, it is time to start thinking about your children’s return to school. What a wonderful and unique goal we have – to provide for your children an education devoted to academic excellence and committed to Catholic values and ideals. No matter the lesson, here at Sacred Heart we have the opportunity to guide our students to see through the lens of being good stewards of God’s world and to view current and historical events by relating them to the Commandments, the Beatitudes, and the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy. What a blessing it is to integrate Gospel values into the curriculum and daily living!

One way to get ready for school is our SUMMER ACADEMY. Once again Miss Phelan and Miss Persia will convene a Summer Academy for students coming in to Grades 1 – 8. Sessions will be held from August 14th-18th. See attached for more detail. If you have not already registered, please contact Miss Phelan at kphelan@sh-school.org.

Our Maintenance team under the leadership of Mr. Mike McGann have made some fine improvements to school. Mr. McGann has installed new lighting in Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 3. In addition to general maintenance, some painting has been done in our hallways and all of the bathrooms in the building. The boys’ bathrooms on both floors and near the lobby, as well as the girls’ room in the gym have all been reconstructed with new stalls and partitions. Additionally, a new ventilation system is going into the girls’ room in the gym. Finally, our gym is getting its annual overhaul and all of the floors will be gleaming by mid-month. We are so very grateful to our maintenance team!

Terra Nova Reports are not yet in, but they are promised to us soon. I assure you that I will have these mailed if they come before the end of August. Otherwise they will come home on the first day of school with the family packets.

Later this week the Business Office will send an email with a formal letter regarding tuition and monthly payments. I am attaching the basic information as the first monthly payment will be due on August 15th.
I am in the process of adding 2017 – 2018 school information to the web site. The updated handbook and all summer reading requirements will be online later this week. A big thank you to Steve Klein, our site webmaster, for getting updates added within 24 hours!!

Grandparents Conference If any grands are interested, there will be a course offered by the Archdiocese later this month. See attached flyer.
EITC and OSTC Funding is being finalized now. As soon as grants have been determined, I will contact you.
Volunteers are in need. If you have time available to help at school during the day, we would love to have you! We need lunch aides and monitors for some of our after school clubs. I am looking in particular for someone to assist our Future City Club. Engineering background would be a plus.
THRIFT SHOP Looking for school uniforms or gym clothes? They are available at a discounted price through our Thrift Shop.
Stationary Sale students are required to purchase copybooks and homework books through school. See attached list by grade.
⇨ August 29th 9 – 11 AM & 6 – 7:30 PM
⇨ August 30th 9 – 11 AM & 6 – 7:30 PM

Thrift Shop Summer hours
⇨ August 29th 9 – 11 AM & 6 – 7:30 PM (concurrent with Stationary Sale)
⇨ August 30th 9 – 11 AM & 6 – 7:30 PM (concurrent with Stationary Sale)

I know that I am harping, but I want to remind you of the importance of keeping your child’s math and reading minds active during the summer. Education today is very much about analyzing and reflecting on what is being learned. But make no mistake there are still things that need to be memorized. In order to manage algebraic concepts (included at all grade levels – yes, primary too!) students need to know their facts. If you could review addition and subtraction or multiplication and division per your child’s grade, this would go a long way to insuring that your child is ready for the new school year. N.B. There is also a reading challenge offered to Grades 1 – 4, and the reward is a water ice party the first week of school!

CLEARANCES AND CLASSES

Just a reminder that we must have clearances and certificates for Safe Environment classes before you can volunteer, participate in school activities, or go on class trips. These are mandated requirements as per the state of Pennsylvania:
Criminal Record Check https://epatch.state.pa.us/Home.jsp
Child Abuse Clearance https://www.compass.state.pa.us/CWIS
Register for the safe environment class at www.virtus.org.
Mandated Reporter Training on line http://childyouthprotection.org/learning/login/index.php.

Have a happy and safe August!

2017 Summer Reading

Welcome to Sacred Heart School summer reading program.

The new selection of books chosen by our ELA teachers promises to enrich our students reading experience. It is our hope that during the summer months our students will continue to discover the positive rewards of reading.

Each student at Sacred Heart School is required to read over the summer. We hope you will enjoy the required and enrichment selections that each ELA teacher has carefully chosen for her grade level. Summer is an exciting time to read and develop a lifelong interest and love of reading.

Happy Summer Reading!

SACRED HEART SCHOOL SCRIP PROGRAM

Welcome back! As we begin the new school year, we would like to invite you to participate in the SCRIP program, through which you can receive a tuition discount and make a donation to SHS just by food shopping!

WHAT IS SCRIP?

Scrip is gift cards purchased for the following food stores/supermarkets: Giant, Acme, ShopRite, Colonial Village, and Swiss Farms. Sacred Heart Home and School Association purchases these gift cards in bulk at a 5% discount. This discount is then distributed evenly between Home and School (2.5%) and Sacred Heart families (2.5%). For every $100 purchased, you will earn $2.50. At a minimum, if you spend $100 per week for 52 weeks, you would receive a discount of $130 on your tuition. Top buyers have saved up to $600 a year!

WHEN CAN SCRIP BE PURCHASED?

  • Tuesdays — 9:30 – 11:30 in school for walk-in orders; orders sent into school/backorders can be picked up as well
  • Thursdays — NO walk-ins, but orders sent into the office will be filled and ready for pick up by 1:00
  • Sundays — sold in parish business center
    • After the 9:00 & 10:30 masses during regular mass schedule
    • From 9:30-11:30 during the summer mass schedule

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SCRIP PROGRAM?

Families with children in grades Pre-K to 8 are eligible to participate. Additionally, families with children in local archdiocesan high schools are also able to participate in the SHS Scrip program.

HOW IS THE TUITION DISCOUNT GIVEN?

Sales are tallied over two 6-month periods: July-December and January-June. Amounts are combined with the proceeds from the Fun Money program (if used) and a voucher is given to each family shortly after the period ends that can be used as credit towards a future tuition payment. For high school families, a check will be written directly to the school on behalf of each family.

QUESTIONS?

Please contact Amy Bauer (610-609-1661 or crawfordbauer@verizon.net) or
Jessica Reick (610-368-8177 or jessreick@gmail.com).

BE SURE TO SPREAD THE WORD TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS! THE MORE YOU BUY, THE GREATER THE BENEFIT TO SHS AND TO YOU! THANK YOU!

Sacred Heart Scrip and Fun Money and Tuition Assistance Programs

The Fun Money and Scrip programs were established to offer Sacred Heart School families a discount on school tuition, and to help raise funds for the Home and School Association. Participating school families receive a tuition credit of 2.5% with Home and School receiving the remainder. Each time a purchase is made, the family name and purchase amount is recorded on a log by the seller. After a six month period, the purchases are tallied, a credit is calculated, and a voucher is issued, to be included with your subsequent tuition payment. Sales are tallied over 2 six month periods: January-June and July-December. Families with children in the local Archdiocesan High Schools can also participate.

For every $100 purchased, you earn a discount of $2.50. At a minimum, if you spend $100 per week for 52 weeks, you can receive a discount of $130 on our tuition! Our top buyer has saved over $600 this school year on tuition.

Spread the word to your family and friends! It’s a great way for them to assist in your child’s education and to help our school! As long as they give your family name at the time of the sale you will receive the credits.

Scrip includes: Giant, Acme, ShopRite, Colonial Village, and Swiss Farms. Fun Money has access to over 100 retail, entertainment and food establishments. We carry over 30 of these in stock.
